Borrowdale Hotel. Helens car needed
a rolling start and Phil managed to get the engine to start and keep running in the last
20 feet down to the road from the Car Park.
Helen was spotted heading to
the Lakeside teashop near Keswick as the others queued to get through the town centre and
out to the M6. Phil did a couple of hours driving, with Dawn driving the rest, and
this allowed all three the opportunity for sleep, but not at the same time!

Those taking part were Gavin, Rita, Phil, Dave Nicholson,
Dave Goodey, Steve, George Rae, Alan & Paul.
A previous attempt to visit the island of Lundy had been unsuccessful, so it was with some
relief that we sailed from Bideford. The crossing, with a flat clam sea, took about three
hours.
There is no harbour on Lundy. The boat anchors in the bay and passengers and luggage are
transferred to a landing craft (just like D-day only safer!). Alan discovered that it is
not wise to pack bottles of drink in the rucksack. The gear is treated rather casually
during unloading and Alan's sack fell off the trailer onto the rocks - he was the only one
with lime juice flavoured P.A.s!
The island is flat on top with 400 foot cliffs all round, so the path up from the landing
beach is quite a slog. It is a long way to go for a bath, but, since there was a drought
on the island the only place to bathe was in the sea. By common consent, sea soap is
absolutely useless, it doesn't lather and it feels like sandpaper. Most preferred to join
the "great unwashed".
There was only one incident that marred the holiday. Gavin was on the receiving end of a
large pan of boiling water. This resulted in some very nasty blisters in some very
sensitive places, but it did not stop him from climbing plenty of routes.
Since the weather was so good we were forced to go climbing every day. Excuses such as
"It's to hot" or "The tide's wrong" were of course available to be
used. Each day had a similar pattern, with much time spent locating descents and route
finding. The beer was much in demand by evening; all that sun bathing is thirsty work.
The devils slide is a stupendous sweep of granite slab 400 feet in length. It starts at
sea level and finishes on the plateau, at a steadily increasing angle. The tourist route
is a true classic, i.e. long run outs, no protection and superb situations. It was enjoyed
by all. Albion (VS) was also climbed

The Bangers & Mash weekend - as we know was
oversubscribed initially by 10 people and it was agreed by the 5 of the 6 committee
present on the evening to restrict the weekend to the 34 available beds. Balders received
some criticism on the evening for allowing non-members and guests preference to members.
He also received 2 phone calls on Wednesday asking for a reconsideration in allowing
spaces for the unfortunate members. After consultation he relented and the disappointed
members were welcomed. In hindsight had he known of the 4 cancellations the task on the
Tuesday evening would have been easier!
In light of this and to prevent future disappointment here are the rules we follow for
booking places.
"A £5.00 deposit will be collected by the red coat to secure a place. This will
apply to events where the HMC has made a financial commitment, i.e. Hut meets, Annual
Dinners, and other meets where catering, lectures are provided".
We wish to keep these guidelines simple and to encourage full attendance at all meets -
even if this means welcoming families and non members. If you have not paid a
deposit then we cannot guarantee you a place. Obviously we wish these guidelines to be
fair to all and will be conciliatory to cancellations for legitimate reasons.
If you really really really want to attend a meet then pay a deposit!

Lundy, 16th-21st August 1984
The Lundy trip was a great success. The weather was superb, except on the last
afternoon, and several of the islands classic climbs were done. |
