Trekking in the High Atlas & Mt Toubkal climb -
Easter 2000 - Gary Bebb
The High Atlas Mountains are only 3 hours flying time from London. The trekking here is
very rewarding with vast peaks and ridges stretching as far as the eye can see. Mount
Toubkal at 4,167m is the highest peak in North Africa. There is also a very
interesting rural culture of the Berber people and a rich history.
Marrakech lies just to the north of the Atlas range and provides an interesting start and
finish to out trek. There are two distinct parts of this culturally rich imperial city.
The French built modern city with its broad boulevards or the tiny spider's web of
alleyways in the Medina: there are many little eateries and cafes - Moroccan cuisine is
considered one of the best in North Africa. We will also have time to visit the Souks
(Markets) to buy souvenirs at the end of our trek.
The ascent of Mt Toubkal is the main aim of our trek - a challenge for any enthusiastic
hill walker. The ascent is non-technical; it is a rough scramble with scree in places.
From the summit the panoramic views are magnificent; the fertile plains of Marrakech to
the north, to the south the rugged plains of the sub Sahara and to the east and west the
many rugged peaks of the Atlas
