            | | I have just had news that madcap HMC member Humpty Dumpty,
who attempted to solo Great Wall (E4 6a) last month, unfortunately slipped off the crux
move and had a great fall. He is currently being put back together again at Ystyty Gynedd.
Luckily Humpty's girfriend Eggweener, who was photographing the attempt was able to raise
the alarm and thanks must go to all the kings horses and all the kings men who airlifted
Humpty within an hour. Humpty is expected to be in the pub next Tuesday. | |

            | | Dear Rupert,
Can you give me any tips on route finding, especially on multi-pitch routes. I recently
had a bad experience in Wales where I went off route onto something which must have been
at least E8 or E9 and ended in breaking both my legs.

            | | Dear Anon ,
This is a common and often hazardous problem which can only really be overcome with
practice and learning to pick out the features described in the guidebook. This can be
difficult though when they bear no relation to the rockface. the best way to solve this
problem wuold be to train so hard that you can climb anything and thus will never fall off
            - for hints see my previous article on training
